If you watch Californication starring David Duchovny, you would have heard a beautifully haunting song playing as Duchovny’s character tries to make sense of his rather messed up life.
The song, called “I’ll be Damned,” was written and performed by Ryan McMahon, a very talented singer who lives on Vancouver Island.
We’ve been fans of Ryan for a few years now. We got to know him when he arranged Megan McNeil’s beautiful song The Will to Survive, an epic love letter to anyone fighting a hard battle, especially other children like her fighting cancer.
McMahon has recently joined forces with two other Vancouver Island musical powerhouses performing under the name The Lion, The Bear and The Fox. The band consists of:
Christopher Arruda (the lion), Cory Woodward (the bear) and Ryan McMahon (the fox).
While we ordinarily focus on a brand’s storytelling ability, we’re taking a departure this time and saying hey, it’s not about the branding or the video storytelling or anything else. This time it’s about the music.
And the beautiful lyrics from the song featured in Californication:
Holy old days keep me running away
Standing on a speaker box having my say
Drink til the bottom is clear then I do it again
Send me a message to remember it all
It gets a little foggy when the autumn comes out
Fill my bowl with nobody’s soul but mine.
I’ll be damned
Back to the well for some common sense
I’ll be damned again
Come back stupid ‘cause they coloured you dumb
You crashed a man’s party sat around and said fuck
Wandered it and squandered all your shots until you go blind
Send me a letter of point-form complaints
The little lady left you now because she is late
And you’re no daddy so she goes solo this time
